In response to the Stuart E. Eizenstat opinion article (“Obama’s path will lead to a secure Israel”) in the July Chronicle: The joint U.S.-Israeli position has been that the issues (“right of return,” water supply, Jerusalem, and others) including borders, are subject to final status negotiations.
By particularizing the border issue to the pre-Six Day War 1967 borders, President Obama impugns this position. He also calls upon Israel to make suicidal and unreciprocated concessions — unless one can believe that that land swaps, which Abbas has said will be minimal, and “recognition” will constitute security while Israel lives inside indefensible borders.
The antipathy toward Israel demonstrated by this contravention and its premise cast doubt as to whether President Obama is truly interested in pursuing the “safe and secure Jewish state” Eizenstat seeks.
