Anshe Sfard Kehillat Torah will officially install its new rabbi, Wes Kalmar, at an event that will feature Richard Joel, president of Yeshiva University.
Joel will speak on “Chosen-ness and Choice: Eternal Jewish Values for Our Modern Time.” Rabbi Nachman Levine, ASKT’s founding rabbi and current rabbi emeritus, will perform the installation ceremony.
The event will take place Monday, May 2, 7 p.m., at the synagogue, 6717 N. Green Bay Ave., in Glendale. A wine and cheese tasting will begin the event, and a dairy dessert reception will follow the program.
Joel, an attorney by training, has been YU president since 2003. Before then, he served more than ten years as president and international director of Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life.
Kalmar, a Baltimore native, joined ASKT in August 2010 (see Chronicle issue of September 2010). He did undergraduate and graduate study at YU and was ordained there in 2000.
