Teachers honored at Day of Discovery

Some 350 people attended the Day of Discovery at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center on Jan. 16.

In addition to classes and a concert, the event included recognition of local Jewish community teachers, shown here. The awards were presented by the Coalition for Jewish Learning, the education program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.

Samara Sofian was named Educator of the Year. She could not attend, so her husband, Joshua, and their son, Nadav, received it for her.

Karen Torem and Sharon Cohen received a Double Chai Award for 36 years of teaching in Jewish schools.

Winners of the Gill Incentive for Teachers (GIFT) Award for innovative teaching were Cantor Marsha Fensin of Congregation Emanu El of Waukesha and Tzipi Altman-Shafer of Milwaukee Jewish Day School.

Winners of the Chai Award for 18 years of teaching in Jewish schools were (from left in the photo): Rabbi Mitchell Cohen and Yocheved Cohen (Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue), Marge Eiseman (Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun), Sharon Fedderly (Congregation Beth Israel), Robert Jacobs (Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun), Sharon Litvin (Mequon Jewish Preschool), Mishy Pittleman (The Academy), Jim Ross (Milwaukee Jewish Day School), Maggi Traeger (Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue). At the podium is Susie Rosengarten, co-chair of the Coalition for Jewish Learning advisory board.
