Former Milwaukeean Samuel Gilbert of Deerfield Beach, Fla., died Nov. 17 of cancer. He was 83.
He was born in New York City and served in the U.S. Army military police in Italy from 1945-46. He came to Milwaukee from Los Angeles in 1957. He owned a chrome-plating company that was a family business, employing his wife, children, and some of his grandchildren. After closing the company, he worked for his son in a recycling company before moving to Florida about five years ago.
He was a lifetime member of B’nai B’rith, and served as president of Milwaukee Memorial Lodge No. 1692 from 1961-62. He was an active champion of civil rights and was a member of the NAACP.
According to his family, he had “a passion for boats” and owned several during his lifetime. He also loved to work with his hands as a craftsman and carpenter. He also enjoyed spending summers with his family at property he owned in Oshkosh.
He is survived by his wife Shirley (nee Gross), to whom he was married for 61 years; daughters Faye (Arthur Krasnow) Gilbert and Barbara Gilbert, both of Mequon; son Michael (Linda Levy) Gilbert of Deerfield Beach; brothers Irwin (Bebe) Gilbert of Columbus, Ohio, and Norman (Susan) Gilbert of St. Louis, Mo.; and four grandchildren.
Blane Goodman Funeral Service handled the arrangements. Rabbi Bernard Reichman officiated at the funeral on Nov. 21. Burial was in Mound Zion Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to Jewish National Fund or the B’nai B’rith Foundation of the U.S. would be appreciated by the family.
