Anshe Sfard Kehillat Torah will be hosting historian Rabbi Dovid Katz as scholar-in-residence during the weekend of Feb. 4-6.
Katz is the spiritual leader of Congregation Beth Abraham in Baltimore. He received his ordination from Ner Yisrael, and has M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from Johns Hopkins University and The University of Maryland. He is currently visiting professor in the department of Near Eastern Studies at Johns Hopkins University.
Katz is the author of many scholarly articles on Judaism and history. He lectures widely on Jewish history. His schedule and topics in Milwaukee include:
• Friday, Feb. 4, following dinner: “International Intrigue, Financial Responsibility and Irresponsibility in Eretz Yisroel in the 18th Century: The Strange Story of the Noda BiYehudah, the Modern Yishuv, and the Hurvah Synagogue.”
• Saturday, Feb. 5, 10:30 a.m.: “Does the Torah Require Mastery of Secular Studies? Rabbi Yehonatan Eibschutz and the Hierarchy of Knowledge.”
• Saturday, Feb. 5, 7:30 p.m.: “From Judaism and a Jewish Community to Judaisms and Jewish Communities: The Impact of Modernity Upon Judaism in Europe and America 1800-2000, or How has the Jewish People Gotten into the Mess We are In?”
• Sunday, Feb. 6, 9 a.m.: “The History of Torah Literature in an Hour-and-a-Half.”
