A tour of world Jewish music, recognition of local educators, and presentations about topics from alienation to Zionism — all will be available at the 2011 Day of Discovery on Sunday, Jan. 16, 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
The annual event will take place at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, 6255 N. Santa Monica Blvd.
The Day of Discovery, an annual event, offers participants an opportunity to explore Jewish learning in Milwaukee. It offers three sessions — 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1 p.m. — at which participants may choose to hear local experts on a wide variety of Jewish topics.
In addition, this year’s Day of Discovery will conclude at 2:15 p.m. with a “Musical Collage” presentation of Jewish music from India to Israel, and from the Renaissance to today.
During the Teacher Recognition Event (10:15 a.m.), the following individuals will be recognized:
• Samara Sofian of Congregation Beth Israel will be named Educator of the Year.
• The Gill Incentive for Teachers Award will go to Tzipi Altman-Shafer of the Milwaukee Jewish Day School and Cantor Marsha Fensin of Congregation Emanu-El of Waukesha.
• The Rabbi Emanuel and Deborah Lifschutz Mitzvah Award will go to Cindy Cooper of Congregations Beth Israel and Sinai, and to Nadine Siegman.
