This will be the eighth year that Milwaukee will have two young Israeli volunteers from the Shnat Sherut Shlishit (Third Year of Service) program, known as “Shin Shins.” They are Yeela Tal and Snir Shoshany, both 18.
Tal lives on Moshav Arbel, a village next to Lake Kinneret. She has two siblings. She has studied art and regards that as a hobby; but she especially loves to dance.
Tal will be based at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, working at the Gan Ami preschool and with adult education programs.
“I’m excited to be here and to get to know this remarkable community, to see and learn from all of you about your lives, and to try and bring you mine from Israel,” she wrote in a statement.
Shoshany was born in Kibbutz Deganya Aleph in the Jordan Valley near Lake Kinneret. He is the second of four boys. He loves sports; was ranked third in Israel for target shooting; has made a film for a cinema arts class; and is interested in environmental studies.
He will be working at the Milwaukee Jewish Day School. “I feel it is very important to represent Israel,” he said. “I can bring a good view of Israel to MJDS students, and I can share what life is like on a kibbutz.”
In addition, Tal and Shoshany will work on projects for Nicolet High School and the Jewish Museum Milwaukee.
The Third Year of Service is a volunteer program for young Israelis before or after their mandatory military service. They often do social service work within Israel, but some work in Jewish communities abroad in the Jewish Agency for Israel’s Young Emissaries Program.
