Psychiatrist Ervin Teplin, M.D., of Mequon died July 8. He was 87.
A Milwaukee native, he graduated from West Division High School, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. He did psychiatric residency in Boston and served in the U.S. Air Force with the rank of captain.
After his military service, he moved to Whitefish Bay and established a psychiatric practice. He also trained psychiatric residents at the UW Medical School and the Medical College of Wisconsin. He was active in the Wisconsin and American Psychiatric Associations.
He was a lifelong student of psychiatry, Judaism, and Yiddish, according to his family. He was one of the founding members of Congregation Shalom.
He was a lifelong chess player. In fact, chess was “a metaphor for how he lived his life,” according to his son Jeffrey (Susan Engler) Teplin of Shorewood; and he often played the game with his grandchildren.
His wife Rita (nee Wollock), whom he married after he finished medical school, died in 2007.
Other survivors are sons Stuart (Sari) Teplin of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Dan (Jody Feinberg) Teplin of Needham, Mass.; and nine grandchildren.
Blane Goodman Funeral Service handled the arrangements. Rabbi Ronald Shapiro officiated at the funeral on July 12. Burial was in Mound Zion Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to the Milwaukee Jewish Federation would be appreciated by the family.
