Irvin M. Becker

Milwaukee physician Irvin M. Becker died on May 23 of pneumonia. He was 86.

He was born in Belle Plaine, Iowa, in 1924, and came to Milwaukee in 1931. He graduated from Whitefish Bay High School in 1942 and from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School in 1947.

He was a gastroenterologist who had a private practice in Milwaukee, and also served as chief of medicine and chief of staff at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He also worked as clinical professor of medicine at UW-Madison and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

He was a member of Congregation Sinai. He liked to play tennis and golf, and to ski and fish. He also was interested in history; he earned a master’s degree in that subject from UW-Milwaukee and taught short courses to senior groups during his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Margery Becker (nee Heilbronner); children Ann (David Muschler) Becker of Chicago, Joan Becker (Mike) Friedman of Milwaukee, and Jim (Polly Freeman) Becker of Seattle; brother- and sister-in-law Barbara and Frank Heilbronner of Bayside; and four grandchildren.

A funeral service was held May 25 at Congregation Sinai. Rabbi David Cohen officiated. Blane Goodman Funeral Service handled funeral arrangements. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.
