I am a safety professional and understand the potential results of the “at risk” behaviors exhibited by many parents in the lot. I have witnessed:
1. Multiple vehicles parked unattended in the fire lane in front of the school.
%u2028 2. Parents engaged in cell phone conversations while driving through the parking lot.%u2028
3. Parents driving at excessive speeds through the lot.
4. Vehicles being stopped in the middle of traffic lanes to talk with friends.%u2028
5. Parents making left hand turns out of the lot between 8:00 a.m. and 8:20 a.m. in spite of the sign prohibiting this action.
Heinrich’s rule states that for every 15,000 at risk behaviors, you will eventually have 1-3 critical accidents. I believe that we are getting way too close to this number for comfort. Furthermore, if we as parents can’t follow the rules and show concern for our children, how can we expect our kids to be good citizens in school?
If parents park in the fire lane and put my kids at risk, they should receive a citation from the police. Parents who speed or talk on their cell phones while driving should have their privileges to use the lot revoked. If the schools do not think it is important to ban left turns onto Santa Monica Blvd. at specific times, they should remove the sign.
I have been using this facility for almost 10 years and have watched the safety performance of drivers in the lot decline over the last few. If it takes one of our children getting run over or an emergency vehicle not being able to get into the building in a timely manner to change our behavior, then shame on all of us.
