Burlington native Ethel Mayer (nee Lipton) died at age 91 on Feb. 13.
A longtime member of Congregation Anshe Sfard, she studied for years with Rabbi David Shapiro. She later joined Congregation Anshai Lebowitz and then Anshe Sfard Kehillat Torah.
Always active in the synagogue Sisterhood, she was a life member of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America. “She loved to bake and sew and was very devoted to her granddaughters,” said former daughter-in-law Gigi Pomerantz of Milwaukee.
She had been a member of the Capitol Court Steps, a walking group at Capitol Court shopping mall.
Her husband, Henry Mayer, preceded her in death in 1984. She is survived by son John (Lili Barchilon) Mayer of Tel Aviv, Israel; sisters Fran Weinstein of Madison, Esther (Ken) Lange of Baraboo and Ruth (Hal) Stein of Mequon; brothers Paul Lipton of Miami, Fla., and Sam Lipton of Las Vegas; and two granddaughters.
Burial was in Second Home Cemetery. Rabbi Steven H. Adams officiated. Goodman Bensman Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
