Col. Phil Freund (U.S. Army Retired) will speak at a Dec. 13 commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the SS St. Louis voyage.
Held at the Eden Roc Renaissance Resort in Miami Beach, the 10:30 a.m. event is presented by the National Foundation for Jewish Continuity. It will include a reunion of survivors; the debut of the original play, “The Trial of Franklin D. Roosevelt”; and the official passenger signing of U.S. Senate Resolution 111.
Sponsored by Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) and passed in May, the resolution recognizes June 6, 1939, the day that the U.S. refused admittance to the ship carrying Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany, as “one of the most shameful days in American immigration history.”
Kohl honored Freund on June 6 in a ceremony recognizing the resolution’s passing.
