David Sax’s new book about Jewish delicatessens will open the 2009 Jewish Book & Culture Fair, which will feature five books in events running from Nov. 9 to 19.
Though “Save the Deli: In Search of Perfect Pastrami, Crusty Rye and the Heart of the Jewish Delicatessen” has garnered significant media attention, fair organizers chose from the gut, well before the book drew raves.
“We go into this not knowing which books are going to sell but with a certain intuition about an author,” said Susie Honigberg, who co-chairs the fair with Dr. Sharyl Paley.
“We really wanted to present high quality diverse jewish authors that would be popular among all populations,” she said.
All events cost $10 and will be held at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center.
Monday, Nov. 9, 7 p.m. — “Save the Deli: In Search of Perfect Pastrami, Crusty Rye and the Heart of the Jewish Delicatessen,” by David Sax. The event will be preceded by a 6 p.m. corned beef demonstration and sampling with Dennis Samenfield, deli manager and chef at Benjis.
Thursday, Nov. 12, 7 p.m. — “All That is Left,” by Judith Harway, professor at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. Harway’s narrative poems tell the story of her family’s immigration and lives in America. The event is sponsored by MIAD.
Harway will also lead a hands-on session, “Life Writing in Poetry Workshop,” on Thursday, Dec. 10, 7-9 p.m., at the JCC. Cost is $20 and includes free attendance at the Nov. 12 event.
• Sunday, Nov. 15, 11 a.m. — “The Girls from Ames: A Story of Women and a Forty-Year Friendship,” by Jeffrey Zaslow. A New York Times Bestseller, the book recounts the true story of 11 girls and the 10 women they become.
• Monday, Nov. 16, 6 p.m. — Family program featuring “Day is Done,” a storybook by Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul & Mary fame. Comprising a mini-concert, book signing and sing-along, the event will be sponsored by Bayshore Pediatric Children’s Medical Group; Gan Ami Beginnings, Preschool and Kindergarten; and Milwaukee Jewish Day School.
• Thursday, Nov. 19, 7 p.m. — “Family Meals: Coming Together to Care for an Aging Parent,” by Michael Tucker and Jill Eikenberry, stars of the TV show “LA Law.” In this book, the couple tells about caring for Eikenberry’s aging, widowed mother and how the experience brought their family together.
The event is co-sponsored by Jewish Family Services, which will have staff members at the event to offer insight to caring for aging parents.
• Tuesday, Nov. 10, 5 p.m. — “One People, Many Paths: A History of Jewish Milwaukee,” by John Gurda. The event is sponsored by Marianne and Shel Lubar.
The fair is the program of the JCC in partnership with Boswell Book Company and Next Chapter Bookshop, in association with the Jewish Book Council.
It is partially funded by the Dr. Gary & Judy Guten Jewish Book Foundation and the Alex & Ilsa Malkin Endowment Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation, the endowment development program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. Many community organizations and synagogues are co-sponsors.
