Edith Bender Schermer died June 1 after a two-year struggle with lung cancer. She was 79.
Born in St. Louis, she graduated from East Alton-Wood River High School in 1948. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Washington University.
She married Stanley O. Schermer but was widowed in 1965 at age 35. A homemaker, “she was very devoted to her children,” said her son Brian (Deborah) Schermer of Milwaukee.
“Despite being widowed at age 35, she provided a supportive, loving atmosphere for her children.”
She had a lifelong love of literature and the arts. “She painted and wrote, and encouraged her children to pursue the arts,” he said.
In addition to her son, she is survived by daughter Pamela (Jim Wasley) Schermer of Milwaukee; son Jonathan (Verlene) Schermer of San Jose, Calif.; brother Max (Borah) Bender of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and two grandchildren.
A private memorial service was held at Congregation Sinai on June 7. Blane Goodman Funeral Service handled the funeral arrangements.
