Many a venerated newspaper has in recent months faced market and demographic exigencies necessitating its cessation or change in format or frequency. Most of these changes are accompanied by the kind of job losses we read about daily, or witness personally through the experiences of friends or family.
Behind each of these losses is the story of a human being; of hopes dashed, of fears generated and, in most cases, we pray, of successful resolution, perhaps through re-direction and rebirth in a new field.
The human stories behind the staff cuts at The Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle are immensely personal to me, and, I hope, to the community. The cumulative years of loyalty and passion of those who are leaving are equal to, if not greater than, the years the paper has been in existence.
No greater integrity exists among the staff, always ready to chronicle community joys and sorrows, and to dedicate endless personal hours to writing, producing and sustaining the news that makes this community special.
When the last weekly issue of The Chronicle arrives, I hope community members will take a moment not just to read the stories, but also to think about the current life stories of the people behind them, and to offer them their thanks, and prayers of well-being.
