Alexander Rofes, a graduating senior at the University School of Milwaukee, has been named one of the more than 3,000 candidates for the 2009 Presidential Scholars Program.
The candidates were selected from nearly 2.8 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools this year.
A panel of educators will select 500 semifinalists in April. By May, one male and one female Presidential Scholar will be chosen from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and from U.S. students living abroad; plus 15 students-at-large and 20 students from the creative and performing arts.
Alexander is the son of Ruth Lebed-Rofes and Peter K. Rofes of Shorewood.
