Theodore “Ted” L. Kahn, a long-time resident of Fox Point, died Nov. 18. He was 87.
Born in Worfelden, Germany, Kahn was forced to flee the Nazis at age 15. He and his brother came to the United States in 1936. Though they spoke no English, they earned enough money to get their parents and sister out of Germany a year later, Kahn’s family said.
He was grateful to this country and served in the U.S. Army, making 14 trips back and forth to Europe on the USS Wakefield. “Family was always first and foremost,” his family said.
Kahn was the founder of U.S. Surplus Goldfish and Stores.
He was a member of Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue and its Men’s Club. He was a life-long supporter of numerous Jewish organizations, causes and services in Milwaukee, Chicago, New York and Israel, and was recently honored by Israel Bonds for more than 50 years of support.
He was preceded in death by wife Lillian Kahn, nee Katz, in 1997; brother Ludy Kahn and sister Trude Owens. He is survived by daughters Melissa J. Kahn of Chicago, Teri (Roger Cohen) Kahn-Cohen of St. Louis; son Randy Kahn of Highland Park, Ill.; six grandchildren; and companion Freda Pressman.
Rabbi Yitzchak Berman officiated at funeral services Nov. 20. Burial was in Second Home Cemetery.
