In his column in the Jan. 9 Chronicle, Rabbi Shlomo Levin likens the rocket fire on Israel to “annoyances and provocations,” as if it hasn’t killed and injured many Israelis. He seems able to excuse Hamas for fighting from within urban areas, thereby shifting blame for civilian harm to Israel.
Given the recent escalation of rocket fire upon Israeli population centers, in addition to the increased sophistication of Hamas weaponry, Israel is not “avenging past hurts,” but protecting its citizens from a recognized terrorist entity bent on its annihilation. To suggest that Israel do otherwise is an egregious expectation.
