Arthur M. Sweet of Glendale died May 11. He was 89.
Born in Madison, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1940. He served as a captain in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Sweet moved to Milwaukee in 1948 and worked as an accountant for the state of Wisconsin for 40 years. He was an auditor and later led quality control for the Department of Health and Social Services.
An active member of Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue, Sweet served on the board of directors and as treasurer and financial officer of the Men’s Club.
According to his wife, he was devoted to his family and enjoyed sports, politics and “poker with his buddies.”
Sweet is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley Sweet, nee Rubin; daughter Nancy Thomadsen of Milwaukee; son Steven (Elizabeth Tang) Sweet of Voorhees, N.J.; siblings Lorraine (Gerald) Borsuk, Sherman (Marilyn Sweet, and Pauline (Ronald) Siegman; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Jewish Community Funeral Service. Rabbi Shlomo Levin officiated at graveside services on May 12. Burial was in Mound Zion Cemetery.
The family appreciates memorials to the Beth El Sisterhood, Lake Park Synagogue or the charity of the donor’s choice.
