Sam Maas

Milwaukee native Sam L. Maas of Henderson, Nev., died on Sept. 5. He was 93.

In Milwaukee, Maas, together with his wife Barbara (nee Miller), owned and operated Miller Bakery from 1946 to 1971. They purchased the bakery from her father who had owned it for many years.

During World War II, Maas served in the U.S. Army Air Force. For two years he worked on the flight crew of Gen. Millard F. Harmon, commander of the Army Air Forces/Pacific Ocean Areas.

While Maas was home on a 30-day leave, in February 1945, the aircraft and crew went down in the Pacific Ocean. The general and all on board were declared dead. For the rest of his life, Maas’ military service remained very important to him, his wife Barbara said.

The Maases moved to Los Angeles in 1971 and then to Henderson, near Las Vegas, in 2002.

In Milwaukee, they were members of Congregation Beth Israel. He also belonged to a Masonic lodge in Milwaukee and to the Jewish War Veterans in Milwaukee and Los Angeles.

Maas is further survived by daughters Deborah Love of Milwaukee, Ellen (Michael) Sullivan of Henderson and Phyllis (John) Carter of Austin, Texas; son Robert (Sara) Maas of Simi Valley, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services and burial took place in Nevada on Sept. 9.

Memorial contributions to Creekside Hospice, 3675 Pecos McLeod, Suite 900, Las Vegas, NV 89121, are appreciated by the family.
