In response to a letter in the Sept. 12 issue raising the issue of “Jewish values” and the elections, I want to say that Republican values are not necessarily Jewish and are not workable.
Leviticus 19:14 states, “You shall not … put a stumbling-block before the blind.” Mortgage salesmen selling dangerous sub-prime mortgages to unsophisticated buyers violate the spirit of that passage. Thus, Republican deregulation of the mortgage industry helped cause the violation of a Jewish value.
Additionally, this deregulation was a primary cause of the current housing mess just as Republican deregulation in the 1920s helped cause the Great Depression.
Leviticus 19:18 tells us to “love your neighbor as yourself.” Doesn’t that mean we should try to help those most hurt by the mortgage crisis?
American foreign policy should not only be judged in terms of “good vs. evil” but also on whether it makes us safer. Republican unilateral foreign policy has been a disastrous failure because we need the help of other nations to accomplish our foreign policy goals.
As a result, the world is a much more dangerous place today than it was eight years ago, when the Republicans took over the government. For example, today, Israel has to contemplate the awful choice between Iran getting an atomic bomb or making an extremely dangerous raid on Iran.
One definition of insanity is to try the same policy over and over again and expect a different result.
