Former Milwaukeean Harry Waxman died in his sleep on Dec. 17. He was 85.
Born in Kishinev, (then in Romania, but now the capital of Moldova), he moved to Milwaukee with his family at age 9. A graduate of North Division High School, Waxman served in the U.S. Army for four years where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.
Following the war, Waxman returned to Milwaukee where he married Betty Anne Granof and raised a family. He owned and operated his own building/developing firm, Waxman Investments, Inc., for over 40 years.
Waxman was a mason and an active member of Congregation Beth Israel.
In the last year, Waxman underwent two surgeries and was in and out of hospitals with a variety of ailments, but recently made a remarkable recovery and enjoyed a spirited Chanukah celebration with his family before his death.
“He went from a hospital bed, to a wheelchair, to a walker…and on Chanukah was smiling ear to ear with my mother,” said his son, Benjamin Waxman (Dr. Gwen Wurm) of Miami.
“Everyone who knew him knew his great sense of humor and his kind disposition,” he continued.
Waxman is further survived by daughters Debbie Waxman, of Gilbert, Ariz., and Marsha (Kurt) Link of Chicago; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Goodman-Bensman Whitefish Bay Funeral Home. Rabbi Jacob Herber officiated at funeral services.
Burial was at Mound Zion Cemetery on Dec. 19.
Memorial contributions to Congregation Beth Israel are appreciated.
