Longtime Milwaukeean Ben Dubin (“Papa Ben”) died on Feb. 3. He was 94.
Born in Chicago, Dubin moved to Milwaukee with his late wife Fae (nee Tamkin) in 1938. He worked in sales for many years.
Dubin was recognized by St. Michael’s Hospital for more than 20 years of outstanding volunteer service. He was a member of B’nai B’rith and Congregation Beth Jehudah.
“He was an upstanding, good, strong father,” who touched the lives of his family and friends in a unique way, said his daughter Merle (Elisha) Ben-Yitzhak of Milwaukee.
Known for his jovial nature and habits of singing and dancing, he loved to gather his family together on his birthday, July 4, and sing “songs about Yankee doodle dandies,” said his granddaughter Eden Langerman-Shaffer.
Dubin’s family also remembers the famous spicy dill pickles he made and home remedies he concocted for sore throats and sunburns. He was a good athlete who loved baseball and once bowled a 300 game.
“Everyone who knew Papa Ben loved him…he will be missed dearly by us all,” said Langerman-Shaffer.
Dubin was preceded in death by his son Arnold in 1967 and his wife Fae in 1989. In addition to his daughter Merle (Elisha) Ben-Yitzhak of Milwaukee, he is further survived by sister Adeline “Babe” Domnitz of Milwaukee, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Jewish Community Funeral Home. Graveside services were officiated by Rabbi Michel Twerski at Spring Hill Cemetery on Feb. 4.
The family appreciates memorial contributions to the Jewish Home and Care Center and Congregation Beth Jehudah.
