In the May 30 Chronicle, Leonard Fein argues in an opinion article that self-respect demands that Jews repudiate Pastor John Hagee because of his various beliefs and statements.
Hagee is founder of Christians United for Israel (CUFI), an Evangelical Christian group that represents 50 million non-Jews. According to its Web site, CUFI goals are “to educate and build Christian support for Israel throughout America” and “to communicate pro-Israel perspectives to our elected officials.”
Each year CUFI gives millions of dollars to Israel. CUFI holds “Nights to Honor Israel” all over the U.S., many in places where there are few Jews. CUFI also holds a conference in Washington, D.C., every year to lobby Congress in support of Israel.
Why do Evangelicals support Israel? The first entry on CUFI’s Web page is: “The Bible commands us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6), to speak out for Zion’s sake (Isaiah 62:1), to be watchmen on the walls of Jerusalem (Isaiah 62:6) and to bless the Jewish people (Genesis 12:3). These and so many other verses of the Bible have one overriding message — as Christians we have a biblical obligation to defend Israel and the Jewish people in their time of need.”
Evangelical Christians do not support Israel for what they expect in return or because of interpretations from the Book of Revelations. They support Israel because their Bible instructs them to. If only more Jews would have the same motivation.
The Committee for Truth and Justice honors the efforts of CUFI and all Americans who support Israel.
