Milwaukee native Alan Stuart Lieberthal, M.D., died on May 12 after a short illness. He was 84.
A graduate of Riverside High School, Lieberthal served his country stateside during World War II and the Korean conflict. He earned his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
After practicing internal medicine for about 15 years, Lieberthal was among the first group of physicians to qualify for board certification in nuclear medicine, said Ethel Lieberthal (nee Ozonoff) of Fox Point, his wife of 57 years. He was also a sub-specialist in endocrinology.
Lieberthal was a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the American Medical Association and Congregation Shalom. He enjoyed painting, photography, music, theater, film, tennis, opera and screenwriting.
When he did not have time to buy a greeting card for special occasions, or was unhappy with the selection in the stores, Lieberthal would write poems to his wife. “[Writing the poems] was very easy for him,” said Lieberthal. “They were loving, beautiful poems. He was very giving, very kind, very gentle.”
Lieberthal was preceded in death by sister Mildred Goldberg. In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Jerry (Kathy) Lieberthal and Mark (Pam) Lieberthal, both of Milwaukee, and James Lieberthal and Daniel (Elise) Lieberthal, both of Minneapolis, Minn.; sister Bernice Rothenberg of Milwaukee; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Blane Goodman Funeral Service, LLC. Services were officiated by Rabbi Ronald Shapiro at Congregation Shalom on May 15. Burial was at Spring Hill Cemetery.
