Milwaukee’s first day school opened in 1949

In The Chronicle’s May 2 issue, the article about Wisconsin Jewry in 1948 mentioned a debate in Milwaukee about starting a Jewish day school.

Milwaukee’s first Jewish day school, the Milwaukee Hebrew Academy, was started in 1949. It was housed in the old Congregation Beth Israel synagogue building on Teutonia Ave.

I went to the school from September 1950 to June 1956, when it closed due to financial reasons. I still have the 1952 banquet book.
