Bernard Ziger

Milwaukee native Bernard Ziger died Nov. 25 after a long illness. He was 84.

A graduate of North Division High School, he attended college briefly before enlisting in the United States Navy at the onset of World War II. A pharmacist’s mate, he participated in several naval campaigns, including that in the Aleutian Islands.

After the war, he used the G.I. Bill to study pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In 1948, he married Betty Joyce Blankstein. He practiced pharmacy in the Milwaukee area for more than 30 years. Simultaneously, he operated the AEF Salvage Company, at the request of his father, Joseph, his family said.

Ziger and his wife were longtime members of Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue, where their three children were married.

Preceded in death by his wife Betty and brother Herman Ziger, he is survived by daughters Dina (Donnalyn) and son-in-law Dennis Maiman of Mequon and Evelyn (Milton) Greenberger of Glendale; son David (Ellen) Ziger of San Antonio, Texas; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Rabbi Shlomo Pontos officiated at graveside services on Nov. 26. Burial was in Mound Zion Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were handled by Jewish Community Funeral Home.
