The 2001-2002 Edie Adelman Political Awareness Series, sponsored by the Women’s Division of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, will kick off on Tuesday, Sept. 25. The programs will be held at Congregation Beth Israel, 9:30-11:30 a.m. The theme of the year-long series is “Turning Right?”
The series is supported in part by a grant from the Edie Adelman Political Awareness Endowment Fund, established through the Jewish Community Foundation, the federation’s endowment development program. It aims to ensure the continued offering of programs designed to educate women on matters of politics, government and world affairs while encouraging advocacy and action.
Programs include:
• Tuesday, Sept. 25 — Marshall Goodman, former dean of the UWM College of Letters and Sciences and current provost and vice president of San Jose State University on “When Right is Wrong: American Globalism Under Attack.”
• Wednesday, Oct. 31 — Dr. David Garnham, UWM political science professor, on “Turning Right? The Foreign Policy of George II.”
• Tuesday, Nov. 13 — Jonathan Levine, Midwest director of the American Jewish Committee. His topic will be “Why Did We Think the Left was Always Right?”
• Tuesday, Dec. 11 — Dr. Ellen Cannon, professor of political science and public policy at Northeastern Illinois University, vice president of the American Jewish Committee for the Midwest Region, and CEO of Cannon Consulting, a public policy consulting firm. She will speak on “Is There a Shift to the Right: Is it as Bad as We Think?”
• Tuesday, Jan. 8 — Jay Tcath, director of the Jewish Community Relations Council for the Jewish United Fund of Metro Chicago, on “Charitable Choice: Is It Good for the Jews?”
• Tuesday, Feb. 12 — Gilead Morahg, professor of Hebrew literature and chairman of the Department of Hebrew Studies at UW-Madison. His topic is “Fiction and the Reality of the Arab-Israeli Conflict.”
• Tuesday, March 12 — Allison Kaplan Sommer, a senior journalist at The Jerusalem Post covering Israel-U.S. relations from Tel Aviv. She will discuss “The Israeli and Foreign Media in Israel; How Is the Game Played and How Is it Changing?”
• Tuesday, April 9 — Ann Lewis, President Clinton’s director of communications from 1997-99 and current visiting professor at Brandeis University, on “West Wing and the Real World.”
• Tuesday, May 14 — David Harris, executive vice president of the American Jewish Committee and advocate for civil rights, church-state separation and immigration reform. His topic will be “Warning: Danger Ahead.”
In addition, an evening program will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 7 p.m., featuring Sam Freedman, author and professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He will speak on “Jew vs. Jew: The Struggle for the Soul of American Jewry” at the Marcus Community Hall, Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center.
