Former Milwaukeean Vivian Vadona Gill, nee Hiken, died at her home in Rancho Bernardo, Calif., on March 10.
Born in 1918, she grew up in Milwaukee and graduated from North Division High School. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and married Robert Gill in 1940.
According to her son, David Gill (Ann Ma), of Oakland, Calif., she was active in volunteer service throughout her life, from her involvement in the American Field Service (AFS), to work at the Jewish Home for the Aged and her tape recording for the blind. It was through her interaction with foreign students that she developed her desire to travel abroad and learn about foreign arts and cultures.
In addition to her son, she is survived by daughters Julie Gill (Randy Michelson) and Sonia Gill (Bill Grieco), both of Berkeley, Calif.; brother Gerald (Barbara) Hiken of Palo Alto, Calif.; daughter-in-law Susan Gill of Oakland, Calif.; brother-in-law Norman (Ethel) Gill of Fox Point; and three grandchildren.
As she wished, she will be cremated and her ashes will be scattered in a private service on San Francisco Bay where her late husband’s ashes also were scattered.
Memorial contributions to the City of Hope or the Brandeis University National Women’s Committee would be appreciated by the family.
