Longtime Milwaukeean Sy Rothenberg of Shorewood died in his sleep, of natural causes, on Sept. 15. He was 86.
Born in New York in 1918, he graduated from Peekskill High School in 1936 and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry and bacteriology from Cornell University.
He came to Milwaukee in 1952 and was employed as a biochemist at the Pabst Brewing Co. While there, he helped develop the wine cooler, his family said. They also said that he was a master bridge player, a gourmet cook and an avid reader. He was a member of Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun.
He is survived by his wife Bernice (nee Lieberthal), son Larry (Marla) Rothenberg of Glendale; daughter Nancy (Dr. Mitchell Sandler) Rothenberg-Sandler of Glendale; sisters Miriam (Phil) Proctor of Tucson; and Alice Kelleher of Fishkill, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.
Rabbi Marc Berkson officiated at graveside services Sept. 19. Burial was in Second Home Cemetery.
The family would appreciate memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association.
