Sophia Foreman

Sophia Foreman (nee Berland) died Jan. 5 in Sun City Center, Fla., at the age of 96. A lifelong Milwaukee resident, she moved to Florida in 1999 to join her son, Larry Foreman, and daughter-in-law Naomi.

A teacher in the Milwaukee Public Schools for 31 years, she taught music and social studies at the former Lincoln High School and music at the former Boy’s Tech High School. She retired in 1973.

During the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s, she played first violin with the Work Projects Administration Orchestra, the Music Under the Stars Orchestra and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. She received a master’s degree in music from Northwestern University in 1950.

In addition to giving private violin lessons, she wrote and worked on musical activity as a means to bring young people of different backgrounds to understand each other. Also, she was a leader in many civic and community programs.

In addition to her son, she is survived by brother Jack Berland of Milwaukee; sister-in-law Mildred Berland of St. Louis; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Jan. 9 at Mound Zion Cemetery.
