Shirley Lois Meis

Shirley Lois Meis, nee Zolin, died of natural causes on Sept. 27 at Columbia-St. Mary’s Hospice. She was 85.

She was born on Milwaukee’s east side. In 1943, she married Richard (“Ditch”) Meis, who had served as an aviator in World War II. They lived in Whitefish Bay.

She trained as a dietician at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, but never worked in the field, said her attorney, John Scripp. She held some later jobs, including one at a yarn store.

Scripp also said Meis was an active ballroom dancer and helped organize and promote dances for charitable causes. He also said she helped promote dances for seniors at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center.

Her husband died in the 1990s and, about five years ago, she sold her Whitefish Bay house and moved into Wesley Manor. This past August, she moved into the hospice.

A celebration in her memory was held Oct. 10 at Northshore Funeral Services Chapel.

She requested that donations in her name be made for the restoration of the North Point Lighthouse, c/o North Point Lighthouse Friends Inc., P.O. Box 930, Milwaukee, WI, 53201-0930.
