Shirley Blankstein Bass

Shirley Blankstein Bass of Fox Point died of cancer on Aug. 16 at the age of 65.
Born in Milwaukee, Shirley graduated from Whitefish Bay High School in 1956 and attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1956 and 1957.

A lifelong, active member of Congregation Beth Israel, she chaired various events and held offices in its Sisterhood. She was also a lifelong member of Hadassah and a regular at various other organizations, including Jewish Family Services and Jewish Home and Care Center.

According to her family, she took an active involvement in the lives of her families and friends, and often cooked gourmet kosher meals for Shabbat dinners and holiday gatherings. The family also said she found great enjoyment in taking walks with her husband of almost 47 years, and maintaining relationships with all of children and grandchildren. A favorite memory was a Caribbean cruise in 2002 with children and grandchildren in celebration of their 45th wedding anniversary.

She is survived by husband Eugene Bass of Fox Point; daughters Pamela Bass of Providence, R.I., Wendy (Dennis) Brickman of Wilmette, Ill., and Susan (Andrew) Klapper of Scotch Plains, N.J.; son Donald (Caren) Bass of Fox Point; brother Norman (Beverly) Blankstein of Boynton Beach, Fla.; brother-in-law Gerald (Sandra) Bass of Fox Point; sisters-in-law Pauline (Stuart) Shappro of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Marilyn Spiegel of Milwaukee, Roberta Bass of Shorewood; and seven grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Aug. 17 at Second Home Cemetery, officiated by Rabbis Jacob Herber and Herbert Panitch, and Hazaan Mitchell Martin.

Memorial contributions would be appreciated to Congregation Beth Israel’s Shirley Bass Floral Fund.
