Sarah Lichtman

Former Milwaukeean Sarah Lichtman (nee Siegelman) died in Austin, Tex., Nov. 10 following surgery for a brain tumor.

She was born in Poland and survived the Holocaust with her father, the late Samuel Siegelman. In 1949, she came with her husband, Rubin Lichtman, and her father to Milwaukee, where she used every opportunity to teach others about the Holocaust. She told her personal experiences to educate students, as well as adults with whom she came in contact.

For many years, she and her husband operated Bay Shore Tailors & Cleaners. In addition, she was active in NA’AMAT USA, Magen David Adom and the New American Club.

According to her family, “She was blessed with a beautiful singing voice and often entertained at social gatherings and Jewish celebrations. She especially enjoyed singing Yiddish folk songs.”

She moved to Austin in 1998 and she became a part of that community.

She is survived by daughters Joanne (Rafael) Pelc of Austin and Deborah (Ken Frankel) Lichtman of Berkeley, Calif., and two grandchildren. Her husband died in 1976.

Rabbi Paul Kerbel officiated at funeral services on Nov. 12. Burial was in Beth Hamedrosh Hagodel Cemetery.
