Longtime Milwaukeean Samuel Lawrence Gershon died March 3 at the age of 88 of heart disease.
A native Chicagoan, he graduated from Hyde Park High School and Northwestern University. He came to Milwaukee in 1955 and worked as an insurance salesman for Metropolitan Life, as a field investigator for the Wisconsin Department of Health and Human Services, and as a mediator for Milwaukee County.
He was a member of Congregation Shalom. His special interests included canaries and other birds, according to a daughter Marcia (Earl) Sadowsky of Mequon. She said that he volunteered at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center and served as a discussion leader for “Share the Wisdom,” a program of Milwaukee Family Services. He was also an avid mall walker, his daughter said.
In addition to Sadowsky, he is survived by daughter Susan (David) Offer of Augusta, Maine; sister Jeanne Greenburg of Bethesda, Md.; and two grandchildren.
Rabbi Ronald Shapiro officiated at graveside services March 6 in Second Home Cemetery.
Memorials to the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center or the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
