Samuel K. Chortek

Longtime Milwaukee resident Samuel K. Chortek died March 10. He was 90.
Born and raised in Madison, he attended Madison West High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he earned a degree in accounting.

After becoming a licensed Certified Public Accountant, he worked in Chicago, before and after World War II. During the war he served as a captain in the Finance Corps.

He established the accounting firm, S.K. Chortek & Co., in downtown Milwaukee in 1947. The firm progressed from a sole proprietorship into partnerships with other individuals over the years. In 1976, Don Gottschalk joined him and created the current firm, Chortek & Gottschalk, LLP.

“Sam treated each client with the professional manner and skill that they demanded, always adding value to their needs. Sam passed this standard to his partners and staff, which is the model the firm uses to this day,” said Doris, nee Hersh, his wife of 48 years.

He was a member of Pi Lamda Phi Fraternity, Brynwood Country Club, Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun, American Jewish Committee, Wisconsin Society For Jewish Learning, Harry & Rose Family Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family Services, Milwaukee Jewish Federation, American Civil Liberties Union, Anti Defamation League, Democratic Party, as well as other Jewish and professional organizations.

His great loves were his family and friends, his accounting practice, reading and golf, according to his wife.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Bernard, and sisters, Margaret Barkin and Julia Perelman. In addition to his wife, he is survived by brothers Peter (Elaine) Chortek of San Diego and Irving Chortek of Milwaukee.

Rabbi Marc Berkson and Cantor David Barash officiated at funeral services March 14. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Memorials to Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun, or the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, 1020 N. Broadway, Milwaukee 53202, would be appreciated by the family.
