Ruth Mayer

Graveside services were held May 9 for Ruth Mayer (nee Wolf). A resident of Chai Point, she died May 5 of complications of a stroke at the age of 91.

She was born in Mannheim, Germany, and came to Milwaukee in 1937 with her husband, Fred Mayer. The couple resided in Shorewood for many years. In 1972, they retired to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He died in 1995 and in 1998, she returned to Milwaukee.

Her first job was at North Avenue Laundry. According to her family, she was sure her “lousy” feet were a result of standing all day ironing. In 1941, she took a job with Holeproof Hosiery and later became manager of its Kardex and Addressograph Department. She retired from Holeproof in 1957 when, together, with her husband, she traveled throughout the Midwest selling novelty items for Fred Mayer Associates and later F & R Novelty Company.

Her daughter, Marion Rice of Mequon, said, “She was known for her honesty, integrity, compassion and determination. She was strongly committed to her family and friends, and always willing to listen and lend a helping hand.”

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by three granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.

Rabbi David Cohen officiated at the service at Spring Hill Cemetery.
