Longtime Milwaukee resident Rebeka Oren, nee Majzels, died of pancreatic cancer Feb. 27. She was 77.
Born in Lublin, Poland, in 1928, “her father’s Mizrachi commitment to Zionism brought her and her brother and mother to Palestine to join him in 1938,” her family said. She was a graduate of Gymnasia Talpiyot and attended Hebrew University.
“She was always committed to the ideals of Judaism and the Jewish state and was particularly proud of her service in the intelligence unit of the Haganah during the formative years of the nation,” they added.
She worked for the Jewish Agency for Palestine from 1952-55 in Geneva, Switzerland. She came to the U.S. in 1955 and to Wisconsin in 1957.
She was a member of Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue and of Pioneer Women/NA’AMAT, where she served as the Donor Book chair.
“Her lifelong work on behalf of the women and children of Israel with Pioneer Women/NA’AMAT and her belief in and support of the Jewish community in the Diaspora represented her commitment to the future of the Jewish people. In five decades in Milwaukee, she and her husband found a vibrant Jewish community and dear friends who sustained her through a full and meaningful life,” her family said.
Preceded in death by her husband, Gideon Oren, M.D., in 1996, she is survived by son Dan (Jeanette) Oren of Woodbridge, Conn.; daughter Daphna (David) Oren of Lake Bancroft, Va.; and five grandchildren.
Burial was in Holon Cemetery, Israel, on March 1.
