Milwaukee native Phyllys Fruchtman (nee Kahn) died Nov. 7 in Hallandale Beach, Fla. She was 68.
Fruchtman graduated from Washington High School in 1957 and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
A member of Congregation Beth Israel and its Sisterhood, she was an active volunteer in the St. Michael’s Hospital Auxiliary.
According to her family, she had “a large and loving extended family” and “her grandchildren and children were her greatest joy.”
Fruchtman led an active life, especially enjoying tennis, dancing and traveling with her husband of 46 years, Dr. Robert Fruchtman, who preceded her in death in 2006.
She lived according to the unspoken creed, “life is for living,” her family said. Following a cerebral hemorrhage more than four years ago, she made a “miraculous recovery and resumed a full and active life” which included two trips to Israel and winters in Florida, her family said.
“She was the truest friend around and all her friends knew they could count on her,” said her daughter Helaine (Lisa) Mark of Atlanta.
She is further survived by sons David (Karen) Fruchtman of Zichron Yaakov, Israel, Michael (Beth) Fruchtman of New York, N.Y., and Merrick (Rachel) Fruchtman of Whitefish Bay; brother Reuben (Julie) Kahn of Milwaukee; and 10 grandchildren.
Rabbis Michel Twerski and Jacob Herber officiated at funeral services on Nov. 11. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
The family appreciates memorials to Congregation Beth Israel or Congregation Beth Jehudah.
