Former Milwaukeean Paul Klieger died June 21 of complications of heart disease at his home in Northbrook, Ill. He was 84.
Born in Milwaukee, he earned a degree in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1939. He joined the Portland Cement Association in 1941 as a laboratory assistant. He left to serve in the U.S. Army from 1942-45 and returned to PCA as an assistant chemist. During his 44 years with the firm, he served in a number of technical and management capacities, including director of the concrete materials research department. He retired in 1986.
Recognized nationally and internationally as an outstanding concrete technologist, Klieger helped PCA’s laboratory become one of the most respected in the country. For his contributions to the field of concrete, he received many honors, including election as an honorary member of the American Concrete Institute in 1985 and a fellow of ACI and ASTM, and recipient of the ACI Arthur R. Anderson and ACI Distinguished Service awards.
He was the former husband and friend for over 30 years of Minna Picard and the father of Debbie Allsebrooke of Lincoln, Ill. He is further survived by sisters Rose (Dave) Kaufman and Inez (Harry) Schoenfeld, both of Milwaukee; brother-in-law Louis Kaplan of Milwaukee; step-daughters Barbara (Alan) Schulman of Northbrook and Julie (Marty) Barkan of California; and one grandson.
Funeral services and burial were held June 25 in Skokie, Ill.
