‘Our Community Women’s Seder’ returns

The women have spoken and they said, “Bring back ‘Our Community Women’s Seder.’”

So, after a one-year break in the five-year tradition, the women of the Milwaukee area will gather on Thursday, April 3, at Congregation Beth Israel for the sixth seder, described by organizers as a spiritual journey.

As in previous years, “Our Community Women’s Seder” will include dessert, a Hagaddah tailored to the event that participants may keep, dancing and singing.
But, explained event co-chair Cindy Levy, “We’re going to add a unique component this year, which is the opportunity for women to learn together.”

The learning, organized by the Coalition for Jewish Learning, the education program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, will “bring in some of the educators from the community to talk about a little section of the seder. We’ll then have table discussions in which we’re going to have some questions posed. [Participants] will be able to think about things and grow a bit,” Levy explained.

“We’re trying to do the same kind of learning that men have always done with the Torah, which means you take a piece and ask, ‘What does this mean?’

“Our intention is, in a very short period of time, to get people to think about portions of what the seder means in a way that they haven’t necessarily thought about and personalize it in this way. It’s a women’s perspective on things,” Levy added.

The seder is co-chaired by Levy, Shari Sadek, Beatrice Strick and Ruth Wallace. Convening organizations are The Presidents’ Conference, Women’s Division of MJF; Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center; Coalition for Jewish Learning; National Council of Jewish Women-Milwaukee Section; and B’nai B’rith Girls.

Women and girls aged 12 and older are invited to the event, which will begin at 6:45 p.m. Advance registration, $18 for adults and $10 for students, is required and seating is limited.
