Mildred Lepgold

Funeral services were held March 3 for Milwaukee public health nurse Mildred Lepgold (nee Scheier). She died Feb. 27 at age 84 of natural causes.

She graduated from the Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing in the early 1940s. During World War II, she served in U.S. Army field hospitals in North Africa and Italy. According to her daughter, Dr. Edith (Craig Pfister) Lepgold of Milwaukee, documents and photographs of her military service are displayed at the National Museum of American Jewish Military History in Washington, D.C.

After the war, she earned a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Minnesota. She served the municipal governments of Milwaukee and then Shorewood until she retired in 1984.

She was a member of Temple Menorah and of the Jewish War Veterans, in which she held the office of secretary. After her retirement, she did volunteer work for Milwaukee Public Television and Mothers Against Drunk Driving, among other organizations.

She was also an avid supporter of area arts organizations, particularly the Milwaukee Ballet, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Milwaukee Repertory Theater.

Her daughter is her only survivor. Her son, Georgetown University associate professor Joseph Lepgold; daughter-in-law, Nancy (Nikki) Dean; and her grandson, Jordan, died in a hotel fire in Paris in 2001.

Rabbi Isaac Lerer officiated at the funeral service.

Memorial contributions to the Lepgold Memorial Fund at Georgetown University, 301 Intercultural Center, 37th and O Sts., N.W., Washington, D.C., 20057, or to Milwaukee’s United Performing Arts Fund would be appreciated by the family.
