Max S. Goldberg

Funeral services were held Oct. 28 for Max S. Goldberg of Glendale. He died Oct. 25 of lung cancer at the age of 92.

He was born in Milwaukee, graduated from North Division High School and majored in art education at Wisconsin Normal College. Because of the Depression, no schools could afford art programs, so along with his father, Louis, and brother Shep, he opened Louis Goldberg & Sons, a family produce business.

However, according to his family, he maintained his interest in art and was known as a fine artist who developed a unique technique of carving wood reliefs using Jewish themes and Wisconsin historical sites as his subjects.

He belonged to Congregation Shalom. His family said that he will be remembered for his selfless attitude and his need to make certain everyone in the room was taken care of and comfortable before he could relax.

They added, “His devotion to his wife of 63 years, Beatrice Goldberg (nee Ansfield), including being her caregiver through a lengthy terminal illness, was an inspiration to his family and friends.”

He is survived by sons Stuart (Ellyn) Goldberg of Tucson and Dr. David (Cheri Weitzman) Goldberg of San Francisco; brother Albert (Naomi) Goldberg and sister Beatrice Chudnow of Mequon; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1999 and by son Gary J. Goldberg.

Rabbi Ronald Shapiro officiated at the service. Burial was in Second Home Cemetery.
The family would appreciate memorials to the Wisconsin Society for Jewish Learning.
