Matthew Sherman

Milwaukee native Matthew Sherman of Mequon died April 10 of heart failure. He was 89.

He graduated from North Division High School in 1933 and went on to earn a degree in pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He followed the family tradition and became a pharmacist, said his wife Anne Sherman (nee Joseph). He owned Sherman’s Red Cross Pharmacy at the corner of 26th and Hopkins Streets for 40 years and his pharmacy was the first in the area to stay open until midnight seven days a week, she said. He was also a member of the Wisconsin Pharmacy Association and AZO, a Jewish pharmacists’ fraternal organization.

A member of Congregation Beth Israel, he particularly enjoyed religious study. Other areas of interest included investments and gardening.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Sandra Sherman (Stuart) Rosenfeld of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Francine Sherman (John) Wachs of Frisco, Texas; son Neil Sherman of Milwaukee; four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Rabbi Jacob Herber officiated at graveside funeral services at Second Home Cemetery on April 12.

Memorial contributions to the Milwaukee Jewish Day School would be appreciated by the family.
