We at The Chronicle want to tell your story. Following are basic guidelines for how to submit anything (from Community calendar entries to opinion articles to birth announcements) to our pages.
For an online version of this guide, please visit www.jewishchronicle.org and scroll to the bottom of the index page.
The Chronicle staff examines submissions to determine if they are worth a full story, a short story, an announcement, a photo — or do not meet our criteria for publication. If your item isn’t printed, don’t feel discouraged; please call to ask why, and continue sending items in the future.
When planning an event, feel free to contact editor Elana Kahn-Oren (elanao@milwaukeejewish.org or 414-390-5770) to discuss possible methods of coverage. When in doubt, talk with us.
As always, readers may contact the editor to share news, suggest a story or talk about issues of concern.
Contact us:
Phone us at 414-390-5888. Submissions should be sent to chronicle@milwaukeejewish.org or faxed to 414-271-0487. More contact information is available on our Web site, www.jewishchronicle.org or on page 4 of every Chronicle issue.
Community Calendar Listings:
The purpose of our monthly Community Calendar is to give our readers a schedule of local Jewish events that they may want to attend. We seek to list events that are open to the general Jewish community not just to a particular membership.
Events should have specific Jewish content; for example, we do not include computer classes offered by a synagogue or Jewish organization.
We will however include some purely social events sponsored by Jewish groups and aimed at all or part of the Jewish public. That includes Jewish singles events, synagogue picnics and a synagogue/agency/organization’s main fundraisers.
Events that run as announcements or stories in The Chronicle may also be submitted to the Community Calendar. They will, however, need to be submitted separately for each purpose.
Submissions should be sent to leonc@milwaukeejewish.org (backup copies should be sent to wjcadmin@milwaukeejewish.org), with “calendar” in the subject line.
Please note that this calendar is not the same as the Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s online Community Calendar, and items must be submitted directly to The Chronicle.
Stories:
Stories are selected at the discretion of the editor and written by The Chronicle staff. If you have a story idea that you believe is newsworthy and unique, feel free to contact the editor at 414-390-5770 or elanao@milwaukeejewish.org.
Announcements:
These brief announcements should be about a future event that is open to the community and has Jewish content. They may also include the main fundraising events of an organization, synagogue or agency.
Photos:
The Chronicle publishes action photos on page 1 and 2. These provide a view of local Jewish life within the previous week, and should be high quality photos (no posed or group shots).
Organizations, agencies and synagogues may also submit photos for ‘Chai-Lights,’ which includes photos from Jewish events around the state. Unlike the action photos, these may be posed. Please send a full caption, including correctly spelled names of people featured, event name and sponsorship, date, location, number of attendees, etc.
Life Cycle policy:
Life cycle submissions should be sent to wjcadmin@milwaukeejewish.org or erinc@milwaukeejewish.org. Forms can also be completed online, www.jewishchronicle.org or submitted by fax, 414-271-0487. Call 414-390-5888 to receive a form.
Obituaries and monument dedication announcements are accepted for people who are or were part of the Wisconsin Jewish community. Dedications are published in two consecutive issues before the ceremony.
Birth, bar and bat mitzvah, engagement and wedding announcements are published for people who are or were (or whose parents are or were) part of the state Jewish community.
Workplace: These announcements feature workplace changes or achievements for residents of the state.
Student: This feature includes elementary through post-graduate students, and celebrates their special achievements. College students may be studying elsewhere but must have attended high school in Wisconsin.
What’s Nu?:
“What’s Nu?” is a basket of tidbits of information about members of the Wisconsin Jewish community. It includes their involvement with the Jewish and general community. Submissions, with photos when available, should be sent to andreaw@milwaukeejewish.org.
Opinion pages:
The Chronicle encourages community members to contribute to the forum of ideas on our opinion pages. That can take the form of commentary articles, personal reflections or letters to the editor.
If you’d like to contribute an article, please contact op-ed editor Leon Cohen, 414-390-5783 or leonc@milwaukeejewish.org, or editor Elana Kahn-Oren, 414-390-5770 or elanao@milwaukeejewish.org.
Letters should be no more than 250 words and should respond to something that appeared in The Chronicle. Writers are limited to one letter per month. Letters should be clear and well-written, and should focus on ideas and issues. All letters are subject to editing and become the property of The Chronicle. To see the complete policy, contact the editor or op-ed editor.
Deadlines:
To pitch a story idea, please make sure to contact the editor several weeks in advance.
Calendar items must be submitted by mid-month for the following month’s calendar. See the current calendar for exact dates. Submissions should be sent chronicle@milwaukeejewish.org.
The deadline for lifecycle and news announcements, “What’s Nu?” and “Chai-Lights” is Thursday at noon, eight days before the targeted Friday issue.
