Laura Pollishuke Levy

Retired Milwaukee Public Schools teacher Laura Pollishuke Levy (nee Silbiger) of Glendale died March 26 of cancer. She was 86.

Born in Memphis, Tenn., she grew up in Greensboro, N.C., and graduated from the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina in 1939.

She moved to Milwaukee in 1948 and began her teaching career at West Division High School. After retirement in 1978, she became a reading and writing volunteer in various MPS schools. She also founded Horizons Unlimited, a personal development firm that she operated until 1994.

In addition to her love of teaching, she was interested in the arts and volunteered for many cultural organizations, including the Friends of the Rep, Milwaukee Ballet and Chamber Theater.

She belonged to Congregations Anshai Lebowitz and Sinai.

She is survived by daughters Toby (Mitch) Colton and Betsy (Fred) Cocos, both of Glendale; stepsons Dr. Michael (Cindy) Levy of Glendale and Stuart (Jody) Levy of Philadelphia; sister Margie (Irving) Camras; companion for 16 years Fred Landis of Glendale; seven grandchildren; and eight step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her second husband, John Levy.

Funeral services were held March 28 at Congregation Sinai. Burial was in Mound Zion Cemetery.
