Retired nurse Katherine Usow (nee Meshen) of Glendale died Oct. 18 of lymphoma at the age of 83.
She was born in Rice Lake, Wis., where she graduated from high school in 1938. She continued her education at the Mt. Sinai Hospital School of Nursing, earning her degree in 1942.
As a registered nurse, she served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then worked at the Veterans Hospital and Milwaukee County Emergency Hospital here.
She belonged to Congregation Shalom and the American Legion. An avid Green Bay Packers fan, she also enjoyed needlework and spending time with friends.
Survivors include son Jeffrey (Janet Bartoszek) Usow of Chicago; daughter Vicki (Howard) Kesselman of Phoenix; and a granddaughter. Her husband, Sidney Usow, died in 1975.
Funeral services were held Oct. 21 with Rabbi Ronald Shapiro officiating. Burial was at Anshai Lebowitz Cemetery.
The family suggested donations to Congregation Shalom or the Wisconsin chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
