Joyce M. Weiss

Joyce M. Weiss, nee Sheffield, of Mequon, died of cancer Jan. 14. She was 77.
Born in Chicago, she attended Riverside University High School in Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Weiss was a docent with the Milwaukee Zoological Society and a volunteer with Jewish Family Services, work which earned her the Elizabeth Friedman Direct Service Award.
A member of Congregation Shalom, she was active in Women’s American ORT-Wisconsin Chapter and Jewish Women International.

According to her family, she was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her many interests included tennis, bridge, theater and symphony orchestra concerts.

She also relished her volunteer work with animals and the elderly. “She set a life-long example to all of community service, kindness, good humor and friendship,” her family said.

Husband Robert M. Weiss preceded her in death in 1993. She is survived by daughters Nancy (Mark McQuide) Weiss-McQuide of Mequon and Elaine Weiss of Evanston, Ill.; sister Barbara Lepp of Mequon; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 17 at Congregation Shalom. Rabbi Ronald Shapiro officiated.

The family would appreciate memorials to the Milwaukee Zoological Society and to Jewish Family Services.
