Longtime Milwaukeean Joseph Kalter died of lung cancer March 20 at the age of 80.
Born in Poland in 1923, he was a survivor of the Holocaust. He came to Milwaukee in 1950, where he pursued a career as a grocer. He was a member of Congregation Beth Israel.
Preceded in death by his wife, Hermine Kalter, in 1993, he is survived by daughters Evelyn (Oded) Ish-Shalom of Milwaukee; Rochelle (Jim) Schoonover of Wales, Wis.; Mara (Mark Ralston) Kalter of Portland, Ore.; and Sylvia (William) Buchbinder of San Diego; and 12 grandchildren.
Rabbi Shmaya Shmotkin officiated at funeral services March 24. Burial was in Agudas Achim Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, the Milwaukee Jewish Day School or Congregation Beth Israel would be appreciated by the family.
