Native Milwaukeean Jerome “Jerry” Kurzer died of lung cancer on June 19 at the age of 68.
He graduated from Washington High School in 1955 and Milwaukee Area Technical College in 1964. He worked with computers, and was employed by Nankin and Schnoll, which later became BDO Seidman, as a systems analyst.
He belonged to many computer organizations, and was a member of Toastmaster International since 1977, serving as the group’s District 35 governor from 2000-2001. He was also a former Worshipful Master of the Milwaukee Harmony Lodge No. 142 F.& A.M.
He was a member of Congregation Shalom and served as president of the synagogue’s Brotherhood.
He enjoyed speaking and judging Toastmaster speech contests, especially youth contests. “His greatest joy was taking care of his granddaughter Megan twice a week,” according to his family.
He is survived by wife Arlene Kurzer; son Scott (Shu-Hua Wang) Kurzer of Ohio; daughter Robyn (David) Markelz of Waukesha; brother Robert (Susan) Kurzer of Arizona; and one grandchild.
Funeral services were held on June 23 at Congregation Shalom. Rabbi Shari Shamah officiated. Burial was in Mound Zion Cemetery.
The family would appreciate memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, directed toward tobacco cessation programs or lung cancer research.
